Arnett
Greene
October 29, 2024
With great respect and heartfelt gratitude, we celebrate the life of Arnett Cornelius Greene, a distinguished leader, trailblazer, and true servant of the Jacksonville community. Arnett passed away on October 29, 2024, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy defined by his tireless work to uplift others, break barriers, and make Jacksonville a better place for all who live here.
Born on June 8, 1936, in Apalachicola, Florida, to Maude and Arnett R. Greene, Arnett grew up in Tallahassee, where he was raised with a deep sense of community and an unshakable work ethic. His family's values of perseverance, commitment, and education guided him throughout his life. Arnett's academic journey was no less extraordinary. He was the third generation in his family to attend Florida A&M University, where he earned a degree in Economics in 1959. His time at FAMU shaped his academic foundation and reinforced his commitment to uplifting his community through education and leadership.
Arnett began his career as an independent insurance agent in Tallahassee, Florida; before in 1969, becoming a trailblazer when he made history as the first Black State Farm agent in Florida. His accomplishment was not just a personal milestone; it was a statement of resilience, breaking down barriers and setting the stage for future generations of Black professionals in the business world. Arnett's work as a State Farm agent was marked by his commitment to providing exceptional service and his ability to build lasting relationships with clients. Yet, it was his role as a pioneer in business that truly made him a legend in Jacksonville.
Arnett's service to his country in the U.S. Army Reserves spanned several decades, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career reflected his unwavering leadership, dedication, and commitment to duty, which shaped his approach to leadership and reinforced his core values of discipline and service to others.
Arnett was deeply involved in initiatives that improved the lives of his fellow citizens. He was a former board member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, Ribault Area Concerned Citizens, and the Ribault Junior High School Local School Advisory Council. He also served as Board Chair for the Northwest Council and participated in several programs aimed at supporting small businesses and youth empowerment. Arnett served as President of the Harborview Water and Sewage Company for five years, where he ensured reliable services for the community and embraced sustainable practices. His work with the Small Business Administration Advisory Council and the Mayor's Economic Development Council underscored his commitment to fostering growth and opportunity for Jacksonville's underrepresented communities.
In addition to his work with local organizations, Arnett received numerous awards for his leadership and community service. He was the recipient of the Equal Opportunity Award from the Jacksonville Urban League, the Small Businessman of the Year Award from the Northwest Council Chamber of Commerce and was recognized for his advocacy and contributions to economic development in the region. He was also honored for his work as President of Frontiers International Jacksonville Chapter, a prominent organization committed to providing youth with mentorship and opportunities and was proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
Arnett's business activities were just as noteworthy. He served as the past vice president of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce's Area Councils, president of the Minority Economic Development Corporation of Duval, and as a participant in the Governor's Conference on Small Businesses. For over two decades, Arnett contributed to Jacksonville's economic growth as a member of the Mayor's Economic Development
Council. He served as an officer of the Jacksonville Local Development Company and worked tirelessly to promote equal opportunities and access for minority businesses in the region.
Arnett's legacy of service, leadership, and generosity is immeasurable. He worked not for the accolades or recognition but because he believed in the power of community and the promise of a better future for all. His countless hours of volunteerism, his mentorship
of countless young people, and his steady commitment to improving the lives of others will be his enduring legacy.
