Obituary

Mrs. Blondell McCottry Mathews, well-known educator, passed away peacefully October 9, 2020.  A native of Ridge Spring, SC, having resided in Jacksonville most of her life, she attended the local public schools, graduating from Old Stanton Senior High School – Class of 1946.  Furthering her education, she attended South Carolina State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and later she attended Florida State University where the Master degree was conferred.  As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. Mathews was employed as a Professor of High School Completion in Science and Home Economics at Florida State College at Jacksonville (formerly FCCJ), where she rendered over 30 years of dedicated service before retiring.  Other affiliations include being a longtime faithful member of Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, USA, Rev. Don Johnson, Pastor, Silver Star and Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Women and the YWCA.  She was predeceased by her husband, Willie H. Mathews.  Survivors include her daughter, Avis Mathews; a number of other relatives and friends.
