Carter Deprince
Jones
March 3, 2022
Carter DePrince Jones, was born on June 3, 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida to two young and loving parents, Colby and Alan. Carter loved everything that this earthly life had to offer. He was the first of two children born to Colby Denise (Jones) Barcous; and the only child born to Alan Barcous. He was the first grandchild born to Leticia Fowler; and the fifth grandchild born to Pastor Carlton and Mrs. Barbara A. Jones. His little Sister, Zaina was the apple of his young eyes, and still resides in Jacksonville with her mother Colby and stepfather Alan. Carter was also blessed with a loving relationship with his step-father, Serigne Diagne. Carter deeply loved his family, cooking, basketball, and God. He had a hardy laugh and a
ferocious zest for life! He excelled in everything that he set out to do. He was a young and talented athlete with a warm and engaging spirit. His presence was bigger than life! He was an exceptional student at River City Science Academy, where he served as an Associate Coach for the Girls' Basketball Team. He played for his School and was in two basketball leagues prior to receiving an injury on-court, in 2020. Cooking was a hobby for Carter. He loved to "whip-up" a new dish in the kitchens of his two beloved grandmothers: Nana and Mama Tish! Sampling his new creations always brought joy to these two special ladies! Wordsmithing with his grandfather, who he lovingly called "Papa," was another favorite pastime of Carter's! He mastered video games, like no other 12-year-old. Carter's ultimate dream in this life was to become a professional basketball player. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James were among several of his favorite players. At 6'7" Carter had a pretty good chance of realizing those dreams. Carter's unprecedented master of the game of basketball, his understanding of electronics, science and technology, and his ability to
navigate unexpected challenges of life, in the world of a pre-teen, far exceeded everyone's expectations. Carter was a spiritual being. As a toddler, he often visited Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, then, pastored by Bishop Rudolph McKissick, Sr., where his Mother, "Nana," and "Papa"
introduced him to the Lord. His grandfather, then an Associate Pastor of the Church, and his Nana wanted to ensure that all of their grandchildren were empowered, encouraged and equipped to live more abundantly by receiving an education, and necessary spiritual food.
Continuing his young walk with the Lord, Carter often attended Sunday Service with his Mother and Nana at First Baptist Church of St. Augustine, pastored by Reverend Dr. Michael McConnell. His grandfather, an Associate Pastor at the Church, often commented that Carter "walked around, throughout the Worship Service, as though he was the Pastor." At the early age of 10, Carter became a member of Gateway to Heaven Christian Church, where his grandfather Reverend Dr. Carlton D. Jones, serves with Reverend Dr. Walter H. Johnson, as a Senior Pastor. Cater was baptized at the Church by his grandfather, on February 2, 2020. Carter's last goal in life was to reunite his parents after a 13-year hiatus.
He accomplished this objective. They were united in marriage on February 22, 2022. He was indeed well beyond his chronological, academic and spiritual years here on this earth! On Thursday, March 3, 2022, God called Carter D. Jones home. He had earned his final "jump-shot" into eternal life. Perhaps now, "he'll work with younger Saints, and shoot hoops with Kobe Bryant" as a part of his Heavenly assignment.
