Clarence Allen, Jr., son of Clarence Sr. and Mrs. Catherine Allen was born October 15, 1929 in Jacksonville, Florida. Clarence was the second of 4 children, 3 girls and 1 boy.Clarence attended public schools in Duval County, Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia; he graduated his senior year from Stanton High School, in Jacksonville, Florida.
After his graduation, he went to Philadelphia, where he was employed by a Uniform Company, and lived in Father Devine Hotel where occupants received rent and food at a reduced rate. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and served 2 years inGermany. After his Honorable Discharge from the military, he attended Florida Normal College in St. Augustine, Florida during the day and was employed by the New Deal Taxi Cab Company at night.
While employed by New Deal Taxi Company, he was a member of the Teamster's Local Union where he was elected as Business Agent/Secretary Treasurer. He later became one of a few black Real Estate Salesmen licensed by the State of Florida in Jacksonville and retired from Anheuser Busch, Inc. in 1989 after 15 years of dedicated service.
He met his lovely wife, Mattie, at the train station upon her arrival to Jacksonville. They were married for over 64 years. They were blessed with 3 lovely children; Clarence B.–United States Navy– (Patricia), Mrs. Cassandra Allen Daniels–Retired Teacher– (Vincent), and Rodger J.–Computer Information Specialist – (Nadine). He was devoted to his wife and family. He and his wife enabled seven of her younger siblings to live in their home and graduate; 1 from Northwestern Jr– Sr. High School and 6 after graduating high school in South Carolina to attend Edward Waters College and graduate; 1 Principal, 3 Teachers, 1 Social Security Specialist, and 1 brother Assistant to the Governor in Columbia, South Carolina. Clarence was a faithful member of Dayspring Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Fellowship Ministry and Wednesday Night Bible Study.
He was an avid golfer and bowler, for which he received many trophies and awards. Clarence also worked with Boy Scout Troop Number 49 with his grandsons for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Allen; son, Clarence Bernard; grandson, Antoine Daniels; parents, Clarence Sr. and Mrs. Catherine Allen; 2 sisters, Mrs. Helen Williams and Mrs. Gloria Williams; 6 brothers-in-law, Charlie Byrd, Joseph Williams, Robert Williams, Willie Lee Catoe, Pernell Catoe and Henry Catoe, Jr., 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Catoe Rose and Mrs. Jessie Mae Drakeford. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Mrs. Cassandra Allen-Daniels (Vincent); son, Rodger Allen (Nadine); 6 grandchildren, Mikael, Quentin,Dayne, Nathan, Anika and Charisse; 7 great-grandchildren; Jhakael, Kelsey, Kaynan, Harper Nicole, Amari, Anaya and Mason; sister, Mrs. Gracie Byrd; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Allen; and a number of nieces, nephews,cousins, other relatives and friends.
