Deborah Mosley
Norman
August 5, 2022
Mrs. Deborah Mosley Norman was born on January 2, 1946 to Will and Mrs. Annie Mae Curtis Mosley in Jacksonville, FL. She attended the local schools of Duval County and was a proud graduate of Matthew W. Gilbert Junior-Senior High School – Class of 1962.
Furthering her education, she attended Florida Memorial College (now University) and served as the Vice President of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, secretary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Second Runner-Up to Ms. FMU. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science Degree, received the D.W. Perkins Award for the highest average in Social Studies and was listed in Who's Who in Colleges and Universities.
From the time that she graduated from Florida Memorial at age twenty, Mrs. Norman knew that her life's work would revolve around helping the youth in her community become all that they could be. Her undeniable passion for helping young people develop their hearts and their minds became her career focus as she vowed to help our youth live their best lives. In order to accomplish her goal, she immediately enrolled in Graduate school at Purdue University and earned a Master of Science degree in Guidance and Counseling.
As she first began to motivate and guide our youth, Mrs. Norman returned to her roots and did much of her work with the youth at her beloved church, the First Baptist Church of Oakland, now pastored by Dr. Christopher McKee, Jr. Because of her love for and commitment to the youth in this community, she continued to coordinate and/or work the Diaconate Ministry and with several major ministries at the church.
Mrs. Norman Retired as the Director of Guidance Services at William M. Raines Senior High School where she served for thirty-five years. During her tenure at Raines, she was instrumental in securing millions of dollars in scholarships for the talented Raines Graduates and received many awards for outstanding service as well as "The Most Valuable Teacher Award". In 2002, she was honored by the INROADS Organization of Jacksonville with the "Guidance Counselor of the Year Award".
As she continued to support her school, she received the Raines High Golden Support Award in 2015 and the Legends Award in 2016. Mrs. Norman also received the Dedicated Community Advocate Award from the Jacksonville City Council and the Humanitarian Award from the Matthew W. Gilbert Grand Reunion Alumni Association.
In 2019, the Guidance Suite at William M. Raines was renamed in her honor. In 2020, she was the first recipient of the Jacksonville Image Award for Education Excellence.
She was a member of Leadership Jacksonville and volunteered as a Big Sister for the Big Brother/Big Sister Organization. She continued to influence young people in the community as she worked with the "I'm A Star Foundation" and its Founder and CEO, Mrs. Betty S. Burney.
Mrs. Norman was predeceased by her parents, Mr. Will Mosley and Mrs. Annie M. Mosley.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband of fifty-two (52) years, Ervin L. Norman; daughter, Ms. Nicole L, Norman; sister, Ms. Brenda Goodman; a number of other relatives and friends.
