Dozell Varner, Sr.'s Obituary
VARNER, SR. - Deacon Dozell Varner, Sr., age 94, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 26, 2018. A Tampa, FL native, Mr. Varner was reared in Jacksonville, FL where he received his formal education, graduating from Old Stanton High School-Class of 1943. After high school, he enlisted to serve in the U.S. Marine Corp. After serving his country, Mr. Varner furthered his studies at FAMU and earned his B.S. degree in Sociology from Edward Waters College, where he also played on the football team. Mr. Varner was employed with the City of Jacksonville, working with Jacksonville's youth and retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in 1999 after 47 years of faithful service. He was also affiliated with Fla-Jax Club and Big Ten Bowling Team. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Hazel Varner; sons, Dozell Varner, Jr. (Wendy), Charles Anthony Varner and Kim D. Varner, Sr. (Donna); grandchildren, Mrs. Latoya Glenn, Mrs. Kimberly Tarman, Dozell Varner, III, Ms. Kristin Williams, Kim Varner, Jr. (deceased) and Keenan Varner; 15 great grandchildren; a number of other relatives and friends, including close friend, Bernard Scott.
