Artist Sylvester Malachi Wells
August 17, 1937 – August 1, 2023
Sylvester Malachi Wells died August 1, 2023. He was born August 17, 1937 in Jacksonville, Florida to Malachi and Helen Wells. Sylvester was the fourth child born to a family of nine children. In the late 50's, while in the army, he focused on his skills of painting portraits.
Upon leaving the military he began learning and working with native Florida group of artists that depicted Florida's natural landscapes. In 1995 a writer for Antiques and Art around Florida coined the term "Highwaymen". Within the late 90's and early 2OO0's his sight began to waver and he was unable to continue creating artwork. Despite his inability to paint, like he use to, he was still able to sell some of his work.
Sylvester Wells lived a simplistic and nomadic lifestyle He settled in Tennessee for several years while traveling the US. selling previously made artwork to anyone interested in buying them. Sylvester enjoyed spreading his message of God and showcasing previous artwork about different verses in Bible.
He is now survived by three siblings; Dr. Charlie Wells, Robert Wells and Elizabeth McGauley ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; as well as other relatives and friends.
