Mr. Furman Adams, Jr. was born on August 18, 1932 in Leslie, Georgia to the late Furman Adams, Sr. and Mrs. Alice French Adams. The family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950's with Furman, Jr. and his brother, James "Boot" Adams.
The family held membership at the Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church, where his father served as a Deacon and his mother served as a Deaconess and was a member of the choir.
As a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, he attended the local schools of Duval County, graduating from Stanton Senior High School – Class of 1953, where he was voted Best Dressed. Furman was a member of the Varsity Club as an elective in High School. He also played basketball in the Jacksonville Recreation Department's, "Basketball League". He persuaded a local tailor to sponsor his team. The Sponsor provided Varsity style jackets with the logo: "KING THE TAILOR" across the back. The team played in Wilder Park and cities as far south as Miami, Florida.
After graduation from high School, Furman entered the U.S. Army where he served for two (2) years with the Military Police (M.P.) during the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Corporal. He also participated with the basketball team while serving in Korea.
Upon his return to the United States, he married his Jr. High School sweetheart, Ms. Yvonne Nadia Head and this union was blessed with three children; Nadia Yvonne, Gary Furman and Karen Nicole.
Furthering his education, he attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Edward Waters University (formally Edward Waters College). Mr. Adams was employed by the United States Postal Service with thirty-two (32) years of dedicated service, before retiring in 1991.
During the 1960's, he joined the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he actively served as a Sunday School Teacher, the Culinary Arts Ministry, the Choir(s), the Steward Board and as Steward Emeritus.
He felt his greatest accomplishment was for his love for his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his entire family.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of sixty-eight (68) years, Mrs. Yvonne H. Adams; his dedicated children, Mrs. Nadia Y. Roberts, Gary F. Adams, Sr. (Jackie) and Mrs. Karen N. Boyd (Michael); grandchildren; Donnell Parland (Tara), Ms. Shavonne Jones, Gary F. Adams, Jr., Mrs. Yvonne Tyler (Reginald, Sr.), and Christopher Adams, Sr. (Alexx); great grandchildren, Reginald Tyler, Jr., Yasmine Tyler, Christopher Adams, II, Parker Adams, Tahaj Parland and Princeton Parland; nephew, James "Bobby" Adams, Sr. (Karen); niece, Ms. Samantha A. Johnson; grand nephews, Eric Adams (Ireishal), James "Snoot" Adams, Kevin Adams and Thaddius Whitaker; cousin, Terrance Adams (Allyson); other relatives including loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
