Geneva
Mitchell
August 9, 2023
After 91 years and 1 day, she received the call and peacefully made the journey to her eternal home.
Geneva Seabrooks Mitchell, the second youngest of nine children, was born in Monticello, Florida on August 8, 1932 to Eugene and Susie Collins Seabrooks. The daughter of a poor sharecropper, life presented its share of challenges, but the family was never short on love, and they shared an unshakable bond. She married the late Cliff Mitchell, Jr., also of Monticello, and to this union they were blessed with three daughters—Martha Jean,Titus Mae, and Elverso Jeanett. Having lived in Jefferson County all their lives, they moved to Jacksonville after the birth of their second child. Together they eked out a living, Cliff as a truck driver and Geneva as a domestic worker. The marriage lasted thirty-three years.
A high school dropout, Geneva dreamed of improving her lot in life – of one day going to college and becoming an educator. She labored during the day and studied during the night, earning a GED in 1962. She later enrolled in Edward Waters College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1967 with a Bachelor's
Degree in Elementary Education. Her thirst for learning then led to a Master of Arts in Teaching from Jacksonville University and an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Florida. She taught at Pickett and Lake Forest Elementary Schools before advancing to Reading Specialist with the Title One Program. After more than 30 years, she retired from the Duval County Public School System to focus on her favorite pastimes—gardening,
volunteering at church, relaxing at the farmhouse, and caring for others. For many years, she was also an active member of Eta Phi Beta Sorority.
A devout Christian and member of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, she was actively involved in various ministries until her health declined, serving on the Usher Board, New Members Orientation and Sunday School staff. She loved the Lord and would often sit and sing hymns or pen the lyrics in her journal.Sunday was a day for worship and being surrounded by family and friends. Every Sunday, she prepared dinner and delighted those gathered around the table with conversations about life, world travel, family, growing up on the farm, and the Christian way of
life.
Geneva leaves to cherish her legacy of love, three daughters: Martha Hemphill (Walter), Titus Davis of Jacksonville and Elverso Powell (Mark) of Fayetteville, NC; nine grandchildren: Renee Davis of Woodstock, GA, Dr. LeVonne Tillman (Antonio) of Durham, NC, Dr. L'Oreal Hemphill of Jacksonville, Markelle Powell-Outlaw (Michelle) of Durham NC, Shantel Jones (Dorian) of Jacksonville, Michelle Davis of Oakland, TN, David Powell (Sharlice) of Fayetteville, NC, Marques Powell of Sacramento, CA and Walter Hemphill, II of Jacksonville; 14 great-grandchildren
