A native of Jacksonville, she attended the local schools, graduating from Boylan-Haven School for Girls. Furthering her education, she attended Bennett College of Greensboro, NC, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English and later the Masters degree was conferred at New York University. As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. West was employed by the Duval County School System as a Teacher and an Administrator, rendering over 30 years of dedicated service before retiring. Her social and civic affiliations are numerous. She was predeceased by her parents, Rufus E. Payne and Mrs. Seleta J. Payne; sister, Mrs. Sibyl Payne Butler (Rheuben) and husband, Alphonso West. Survivors include her children, Mrs. Debrah West Daniels (James) and Dr. Bruce E. West (Necole); grandchildren, Ms. Nichole White Stephens-Johnson, Mrs. Kimberley White Simmons (Rev. Timothy, Sr.), Ms. Stephanie A. White and Cole R. West; 7 great grandchildren; devoted niece, Mrs. Beverly E. Shields; a number of other relatives and friends.
