Obituary

Gwendolyn Delores Thompson Flanders, the oldest of eight, was born to the late Charles and
Otis Mae Thompson on October 21, 1938, in Enterprise, Florida. After relocating to
Jacksonville, she attended the local public schools where she was a "Proud Mighty Blue Devil"
graduating from New Stanton Senior High School, Class of 1957. Furthering her education, she
earned the Bachelor's degree at Edward Waters College and the Master's Degree in Library
Science was conferred at Atlanta University.
Early in life Mrs. Flanders accepted Christ at West Union Baptist Church, where she was a
member until her marriage. After her marriage she became a member of Woodlawn Presbyterian
Church in 1965 to be with her husband. As an active member of her church, she served
diligently for 58 years singing in the Choir, Director of Vacation Bible School for 25 years, the
Presbyterian Women Organization, and Co-Leader of the Mid-Week Bible Study. Also, she
served as an Elder and Deacon and was a devoted servant.
On January 24, 1964, Gwendolyn was joined in Holy Matrimony to Joseph R. Flanders, Sr. and
this union was blessed with.one daughter, Letitia Flanders and one son, Joseph Flanders, Jr. She
also acquired one stepdaughter, Michelle Flanders. She was a loving and caring mother and
grandmother (affectionately known as, "Grandma G").
As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. Flanders was employed by Duval
County Public Schools. As a devoted Librarian/Media Specialist, her assignments included
Oakland Elementary, R.L. Brown Elementary, Sandalwood High, San Jose Elementary, and last
and dearest to her heart, Ribault Senior High Schools. Mrs. Flanders retired after rendering 31
years of dedicated service.
Other affiliations include, an active member of Gamma Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she was a Silver Star and Life Member with 34 years of service;
served on committees including Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and the Scrapbook
Committee for many years. As an avid traveler, she loved to travel. She travelled with her
family and friends and was a member of "Friends Who Love To Travel" group. They traveled
to many places around the world.
On March 18, 2023, Mrs. Gwendolyn Deloris Thompson Flanders peacefully passed away in
Jacksonville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She leaves to
cherish her memory , a loving daughter, Letitia; son, Joseph, Jr.(Theresa); grandson, Loyal;
stepdaughter, Michelle; step-granddaughter, Lindsey; brothers, Charles, Jr. and Otis Maurice
Thompson; sisters, Sonya Thompkins(Clyde), Victoria Hill(Roy), and Brenda Williams; a
number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and caring friends.
