Honorary Past Grand Master, Sollie Mitchell, HBTM, Zerubbabel # 1 HRAM, 103, well-known Centenarian and Civic Leader, passed away peacefully May 23, 2022, surrounded by his family. A native of Ocilla, Georgia, having resided in Jacksonville most of his life, he attended the local schools of Duval County, graduating from Stanton Senior High School – Class of 1940. Furthering his education, he attended Florida Normal College (now Florida Memorial College), where he earned a B.S. degree. A WWII Veteran, Mr. Mitchell enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served his country before being Honorably Discharged. Mr. Mitchell was employed as a Pullman Porter for Seaboard System (now, CSX), where he rendered many years of dedicated service before retiring. Other affiliations include being a faithful member of Historic Mt. Zion AME Church, A. Philip Randolph Sleeper Car Porter Union, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Life Member of the NAACP. Masonic affiliations include S.M. Davis Commandry #99, Tillman Valentine Consistory # 22, United Supreme Council - Past Sovereign Grand Commander, J.S. Coppock #190, Rabia Temple # 8 and honorary member of Sollie Mitchell Lodge # 377. He was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Mary Barnett Mitchell. Survivors include his nephews, Maurice Barnett, Jr. (Carolyn) and Charles Barnett (Mary); grandnieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Mrs, Pearl C. Barnett, a number of other relatives and friends.
