Mrs. Isabelle Atkinson Kelly, 100, well-known educator and centenarian, passed on Thursday,October 29, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The granddaughter of three former slaves, she was the daughter of John Atkinson and Bessie Agent Atkinson. She was born and grew up in Waverly, Camden County, Georgia in the Honey Creek Community. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. She completed her early grades at the school in her Community and then enrolled at (Old) Risley High School in Brunswick, GA where she attended eighth thru the twelfth grades. She graduated first in her class at Risley High School.  Initially, Mrs. Kelly graduated from Walker Business College in Jacksonville, Florida and worked at Afro- American Life Insurance Company prior to attending Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach where she obtained a B.S degree in Mathematics. She obtained a M.Ed. in Mathematics from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Mrs. Kelly taught Mathematics in the Duval County Public School System (New Stanton and Paxon Senior High Schools) for twenty-six years. After she retired from the School System in 1986, she taught Algebra for six years at Florida Community College at Jacksonville (now Florida State College), Kent Campus. Mrs. Kelly was a faithful member of West Union Missionary Baptist Church for almost seventy years. Over her many years at West Union she taught Sunday School, served on the Usher Board, participated on church programs such as Women's Day and Dual Day, was Assistant District Leader and served on the Church's Board of Trustees. Mrs. Kelly was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Beta Alpha Zeta Chapter, Inc. and a Life Member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In early September of this year, first responders led an extensive drive-by motorcade past Mrs. Kelly's home in honor of her 100th birthday. She was absolutely overjoyed by the celebration and the love and admiration displayed by the many, many well-wishers as they waved and shouted congratulatory messages to her and honked their car horns. She thoroughly enjoyed herself that day and we are all grateful that she was able to receive her flowers, such beautiful flowers, while she was still living. In 1970, Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her husband of twenty-seven years, Leroy Kelly. She leaves to mourn her passing her devoted and beloved children, Dr. Leroy C. Kelly (Jacksonville, FL), Altamese Kelly Powell (Jacksonville, FL), and Dr. Regina Kelly-Scurry (Fort Lauderdale, FL); two grandchildren, RoTore' K.
