Obituary

Mrs. Johnnie Jordan Cowart, well-known educator and businesswoman, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2020.  A native of Birmingham, AL, she attended the local public schools of Birmingham Independent School District, graduating from Parker High School.  Furthering her education, she attended Tuskegee Institute, where she earned a Bachelor's degree and later the Master's degree was conferred.   As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. Cowart was employed by Duval County School Board as an Elementary School Teacher as well as a Librarian, having rendered over 35 years of dedicated service before retiring. Mrs. Cowart also served as Accountant for her family's gas station business.  Other affiliations include being a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. - Gamma Rho Omega Chapter, NAACP, Tuskegee University National and Local Alumni Association.  She was predeceased by her husband, Ashby V. Cowart, Sr. Survivors include her daughter, Gwendolyn C. Watson; son, Col. Ashby V. Cowart, Jr. (USAF, Ret.) and daughter-in-law, Melanie G. Cowart, Esq.; sister, Tommye Moore; grandchildren, Dr. Duane G. Watson (Dr. Sarah Brown-Schmidt), Daryl G. Watson and Ashby V. Cowart, III; great grandchildren, Otto, James, Charles and Forrest Watson-Brown; sister-in-law, Janie Cowart Madry; a number of other relatives and friends.
