Joseph Simmons was born to the late Levi and Jessie Bell Edwards Simmons on November 20, 1927 in Albany, Georgia. He attended the schools of Dougherty County, Georgia., where he graduated High School. Following graduation, he enlisted into the United States Army. Joe
served his country proudly until being Honorably Discharged.
Early in life, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. At the time of his demise, Joe was a member of The Bethel Church, currently under the pastorate of Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Jr., Lead Pastor and Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr, Pastor Emeritus. As an active member
of his church, Joe has served as a member of the Usher Ministry.
On June 1, 1953, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Miss Alfreda Fields. Joe andAlfreda shared a life together for more than fifty-four years before she predeceased him in 2008.
In his professional career, Joe was employed by Jacksonville Naval Air Station as Supply Clerk. He rendered twenty-seven years of dedicated service before retiring. Other affiliations include Mary Singleton Senior Center, where he was one of the founders of Joe and the
Rockettes. The group was founded in 2000, starting with five members and today has grown to over 40 members of which 26 are actively performing at various engagements. Also, Joe served as a Dance Instructor of the group. The group has performed in many City and State community engagements.
Mr. Joseph Simmons departed this life on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; siblings, Levi Simmons, Mrs. Mattie Hawk, Mrs. Jessie Cummings, CSM Johnnie Simmons, US Army(Retired), Ozell Simmons, Eddie Etheridge, Ms. Annie Grant, Robbie Lee Simmons Butler, Eugene Simmons, and Ms. Thelma Hicks.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his legacy of a loving, devoted and protective family including his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mae Simmons; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
