Mrs. Loyce Jeannette Lang Hill finished her task, answered the call and left behind a legacy of love and service to her family, friends and community on Monday, January 10, 2022.
"Jeannette", as she was called by her immediate family and a few others, was the second of ten children born to Nolan Lang, Jr. and Edna Mae Johnson Lang on January 14, 1932 in Jacksonville, Florida and spent much of her childhood days in the small community of New Berlin, FL.
She attended three of the local schools of Jacksonville and graduated from Stanton High class of 1948. In 1952, Jeannette received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Florida Agriculture and Mechanical College (FAMU) in Tallahassee, FL.
In June 1953, she married Frederick Roosevelt Hill. This union was blessed with two children.
She began her professional career as a Registered Nurse in Gainesville, FL. She was also employed in West Virginia, Arizona and Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, FL as the first Black RN to work in the pediatrics department.
In 1957, Jeannette and Freddie moved to Los Angeles, CA. In search of a church home, they found and joined the Episcopal Church of the Advent with the Rev. Canon Lewis P. Bohler, Jr., Pastor. Loyce served as a devout member of Church of the Advent for more than 50 years with Father Bohler as her mentor. Her strong faith in God and love for humanity helped to sustain her. Loyce was determined to reach her potential in the medical field. She became employed at Orthopedic Hospital of Los Angeles as a Registered Nurse for approximately seven years, and was later employed with Blue Cross of Southern California for nearly twenty years.
Loyce decided to return to school as she continued to work. She enrolled in the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.) where she earned a Master of Science Degree in Community Mental Health Nursing. She became employed with the County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health as a Mental Health Counselor RN. There she found her niche. She had a deep passion for helping people. Her love, compassion, warmth, sincerity and trustworthiness helped to establish her reputation as being among the best.
Loyce became a Certified Parenting Instructor, was engaged in individual and group therapy, consulted school and community agencies who offered parenting, mental health careers and elderly support. As a member of the Advent, Loyce was a Licensed Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer, Past President of Women of the Advent, and Recipient of the Rector's Award for 1967 and 1991. She was a sincere and loyal member of FAMU Alumni and FAMU's Past President of the National School of Nursing Alumni. In 1991, she was inducted into the Florida A&M School of Nursing Hall of Fame.
Loyce received a certificate from L.A. County Mental Health Dept. in 1993, was a member of Kaiser Permanente Hospital Service Council, California African American Museum Service Council and was a dedicated member of the Council of Black Nurses, Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Loyce was predeceased by her parents, a son Frederick Mykle Hill, and five siblings, Constance, Barbara Rose, Edward, Gerald and Maurice. She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Lisa Hill Lajide, 1 grandson Christopher Austin Hill, 3 great grands; 3 great great grands; 3 sisters Norma Lang Brown (Samuel), Gwendolyn Lang Jones (Walter), Leah Lang Williams, and a brother Ronald Lang (Leila.) Two sisters-in -law Thomasina Hill Taylor and Barbara Ann Lang, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Fond memories of Loyce will remain with us forever that will include her incredible love for God and devotion to her family and friends, her passion for local and international travel, and her genuine respect for humanity.
