MATHIS – Mrs. Margaret S. Mathis passed away peacefully on August 23, 2018. A native of Jacksonville, she attended the local public schools of Duval County, graduating from Stanton High School – Class of 1946. Furthering her education, she attended Florida Memorial College where she earned a B.A. degree in Education and the Master's degree was conferred at Florida A&M University. As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. Mathis was employed with Duval County School Board and as a Reading Instructor for another 30 years at Florida State College of Jacksonville. Mrs. Mathis was a dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Jr., Pastor and Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr., Pastor Emeritus. Mrs. Mathis was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Annie Smith; husband, David D. Mathis and brothers, Roland and Charles Smith. Survivors include her daughters, Patricia M. Wade (Andrew) and Janice M. Townsend (William); grandchildren, Roderick Wade (Kyra), Angelia W. Moore (Allen), Antoinette Wade (Jermain) and Byron D. McNair, Sr.; 7 great grandchildren; nieces, Sandra Sampson and Cheryl Miles; a number of other relatives and friends, including her companion of over 45 years, Herman Brown.
