Mrs. Marian Sutton Walker was born April 11, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida to George A. and Mrs. Leila Parker Sutton.
She attended the local schools and graduated from Fisk University and received a Master's degree in Social Work from Atlanta University. Her first employment was with the Department of Public Welfare (now the Department of Children and Families) as a Case Worker and Supervisor.
Later, she was the first Afro-American to be hired on the state level, which was the administrative and policy-making body for the 12 th District Offices in the State of Florida. At that time, the State Office was in Jacksonville and her position was Medical Social Work Consultant. This was during the early 1960's and opened doors for others to follow. Marina was also the first Afro-American to be employed in Social Services at the State Mental Hospital in Macclenny, as a Psychiatric Social Worker. She served on several local boards in the community. She retired from the Duval County School System Social Work Services, where she served as Coordinator after rendering over 35 years of dedicated service.
Being an avid Bridge player, she was a member of the Gems Bridge Club, the Smart Set Bridge Club, and the River City Aces Bridge Club. Marian was a member of Forever Friends, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a Charter Member of the Jacksonville Chapter of Jack and Jill of America.
Marian was a lifetime member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, where she served on the Vestry one time. She was currently a member of Daughters of the King.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Rowland Sutton, Hattie Tillman, George Sutton, Jr., Vivian Sutton, and Lettye Sowell and her husband, Matthew Walker.
On August 19, 2021, Mrs. Marian Sutton Walker went home to be with the Lord. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Matthew Gregory Walker (Maria) and George Sutton Walker; grandchildren, Andrew Walker, Evan Walker, Emely Walker and Amelia Walker; sister, Linda Denkins; nieces, Patricia Cherry and Sheila Williams (Albert); a number of other relatives and friends.
