A Homegoing Celebration for well-known educator, "Coach" Nathaniel S. Washington, Sr., 93, will be held 10 AM, FRIDAY, October 18, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, where he held faithful membership, Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Jr., Senior Pastor and Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr., Pastor Emeritus, officiating. A Jacksonville native, Coach Washington attended the local public schools, graduating from Stanton Senior High School – Class of 1944. A WWII Veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served his country faithfully before being Honorably Discharged. Furthering his education, he attended Florida Normal College (now, Florida Memorial University), where he earned a BS degree (1949) and later he attended New York University where the Masters degree was conferred (1958). As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, he was employed as a Teacher and Coach, having rendered over 58 years of dedicated service before retiring. Also, he was Owner/Operator of Patti's Daddy's Restaurant and Quik Stop. Other affiliations include being the Originator of the Bob Hayes Invitational Track Meet, Deacon Emeritus of his church, Florida Memorial University Alumni Association, where he formerly served as Trustee and Life Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Coach Washington was predeceased by his parents, David and Mrs. Mary Moran Washington; sister, Mrs. Mary Stephens and son, Nathaniel Washington, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Ira B. Washington; daughter, Mrs. Patti Washington Bennefield (Washington); 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Jean Bryant; devoted niece, Mrs. Bernice Kohn (Emory); godchildren, Dr. Thelma Geiger Glover, Mrs. Denise Jefferson and Asa Williams; devoted mentee, Maurice "Blinky" Jones (Mary); a number of other relatives and friends.
