Obituary

Mr. Meeks passed away peacefully on February 18, 2020.  A native of Jacksonville, he attended the local public schools, graduating from Stanton Senior High School in 1955.  After completing high school, he attended Edward Waters College and Bethune-Cookman College earning an A.A. and B.S. Degree respectively. Meeks later attended UNF, where his Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership was conferred. He entered the U.S. Army in November 1960, and later served 18 years in the U.S. Army Reserves until being Honorably Discharged in 1995. His career as an educator began as Head Coach at Butler High School (Barnwell, SC). Most of his professional career was as a Duval County outstanding educator where he was employed as an Athletic Director, Head Coach, and School Administrator with the Duval County School Board. He rendered over 40 years of dedicated service as an educator before he retired.  Meeks lived a life of service to his community. His most recent affiliations included being a member of the Men's Ministry, former President of District #27 of his church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Jacksonville Alumni Chapter, Founding member of the Simonds- Johnson Park Reunion Committee, and President of the African-American Coaches, Game Officials, and Athletic Association, Inc. He was predeceased by his parents, Spencer W. Meeks, Sr. and Mrs. Deronia Moses Meeks; brother, Roland Meeks and sister, Rosemary Meeks.  Survivors include his children, Michael A. Meeks, Maria Meeks Howell (Kermit), Thalia Walker Elliott (Owen), and Monica Meeks Maragh; grandchildren, Anahndi Maragh -Codjoe (Nii), Nisaa Maragh and Carson Owen Elliott; siblings, Demetria Meeks Daniels, Emmerell Meeks Owens, Kenneth Meeks (Joanne), Marjorie Meeks Brown (Fred), Ronald Meeks (Valentina), VanNess Meeks, Francina Meeks, Andrena Meeks Morgan, Terry Meeks,  Sharon Meeks DeBouse and Cheryl Meeks Major; aunt, Ollie Meeks; sister-in-law, Myra Meeks; a number of other relatives and friends.  Mr. Meeks will rest in the mortuary for visitation WEDNESDAY from 5PM until 7PM and THURSDAY at his church from 9AM until the hour of service. Interment will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
