Theodore "Ted" Richardson, Sr., 87

Beloved Husband, Father, Educator, Coach, Deacon and Sports Hall of Famer

Theodore "Ted" Richardson, Sr., 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

A proud graduate of Matthew W. Gilbert High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Class of 1957 and Florida A & M University (FAMU), Class of 1961 in Tallahassee, Florida . Ted was a standout athlete, excelling in both football and baseball from 1957 to 1960.  His exceptional talent and dedication to sports led to his induction into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and he was also honored by The African American Coaches and Games Officials Association (AACGOAA) for his contributions to coaching and athletics, in recognition of his contributions to both sports.

Following his athletic career, Ted dedicated his life to shaping young minds as an educator and coach in Jacksonville . Teaching was more than a career for him - it was his calling.  He took great pride in mentoring students and inspiring them to reach their full potential, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Outside of the classroom, Ted found joy on the golf course, spending many peaceful hours perfecting his swing.  He was also an avid football fan , never missing an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams.

One of Ted's greatest passions was cooking and seasoning food to perfection! Whether he was in the kitchen, at the grill, or preparing a special meal for family, friends and church members, he had a true gift for bringing flavors to life.  His love for cooking wasn't just about food - it was about sharing joy, bringing people together, and creating lasting memories around the dinner table.

A man of deep faith, Ted was a dedicated Deacon at the Bethel Church, where he served faithfully for many years.  His devotion to his faith and church was evident in the kindness, wisdom, and encouragement he shared with those around him.

Above all, Ted was a devoted family man . He shared 63 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Zella Richardson , who was his greatest partner and best friend.  He was a loving father to Thea Burrell, Chavella Richardson, and Theodore Richardson, Jr., and a proud grandfather to Michael A. Waters, Jr. (Laura), Taran J. Burrell, and Kyomi Richardson. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Makhi Waters and Mason Waters, who brought him endless joy.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ethel Richardson, as well as his siblings, Frank Richardson, Willie Richardson, and Mabel Cooper (Booker T.).

He is also survied by his niece, Johnnie Mae Griffin , and lifelong friends, Curtis Miranda (Elizabeth) and Tommy Chandler (Gracie) , who shared many cherished memories and stood by his side through the years.  He was also blessed with devoted caregivers, Shawniselynn Miller and Janice Truett, whose compassion and support brought him comfort.  Additionally, he cherished his godchildren, Collie Buchanan, Jr. and Megan McDowell, who held a special place in his heart.

Ted was affectionately known for his humor, wisdom, and infectious joy for life.  He also had a reputation as a legendary pool shark and enjoyed playing pool and cards with friends and family, always bringing laughter and friendly competition to every game .

Known for his quick wit and wisdom, he often reminded those around him:

  • "If I were any better; I'd be scared."
  • "You only come this way once."
  • "If you can't take it light, take it the best way you can."
  • "Let me see, said the blind man."
  • "Tall like pine, black like crow, and talk mo' trash than the radio."
  • And when his children or grandchildren got too rowdy, he would motion downward with his hands and utter a simple, "Settle down"

Ted's love, kindness, wisdom, and warm spirit will be deeply missed but forever cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.  His family finds comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the lasting impact he made on his community.  Hubba-Hubba!
