Vertrese
Cornelius
November 1, 2024
Vertrese M. Cornelius was born on May 23, 1947, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Simon and Almeta Moorer. She was the eldest of five children. On November 1, 2024, the Lord called her home to be with Him.
Vertrese loved the Lord and was a devoted member of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church for over 30 years. Before her season of extended illnesses, she faithfully served as a deaconess and was the first president of District #35 under the leadership of Deacon Gary Napoleon.
She had a passion for inspiring children to reach their full potential in life. Vertrese graduated from New Stanton High School in 1965, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Edward Waters College (University) in 1969, and a Master of Education degree from the University of North Florida in 1984. She taught English and served as an Assistant Principal in both middle and high schools within the Duval County School System, retiring after more than 30 years of dedicated service to the youth and community. Even after retirement, she continued to work with young people.
Vertrese also owned and directed EFS Learning Center in Jacksonville, providing tutorial services to students throughout Duval County, the Jacksonville Urban League, and her church, Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Preceding Vertrese in death were her parents, Simon and Almeta Moorer, and her sister, Janet Moorer. She leaves to mourn her loving husband, John W. Cornelius; sons, Archie Gallon III (Taryn) of Jacksonville, Dwayne Gallon of Atlanta, GA, and John P. Cornelius of Orlando, FL; siblings, Simon Moorer Jr., Paulette Merix (Chris), and Andrea Negron (Fred), all of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Elijah Gallon, Aaliya Gallon, Damarii Gallon, and Joseph Young Cornelius; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
May Vertrese be rewarded in heaven for her faithfulness to God, her spiritual guidance, unconditional love, instructional ability, personal sacrifices, and the cherished memories she leaves with her loved ones.
